Side hustles for writers: 8 online business ideas ranked, and how AI changes the work

Bar chart of median weeks to a first dollar for writing-based ideas: services 4, newsletters 17, content channels 20

The short answer

93 of our 370 researched online business ideas (25%) list writing as a skill. Services that use it are fastest, with a median of four weeks to a first dollar and a potential of $2,500 a month, an estimate and not an earning. Newsletters, content sites and channels take around four months or more.

Key takeaways

  • 93 of 370 ideas (25%) list writing as a skill, and 88 of the 90 non-GPT ones cost under $500.
  • Writing-based services take a median of four weeks to a first dollar. Newsletters take about 17 weeks and content channels about 20.
  • Service ideas have a median potential of $2,500 a month, against $1,500 for newsletters and $1,250 for content ideas.
  • 46 of the ideas need writing as their only skill, and 17 pair it with design.
  • Every plan on our board is built around AI drafting, so the skill being sold is editing, judgement and knowing a niche.

Writers are told they can "just start a blog", which is how a lot of people spend a year earning nothing. Writing is a real skill that a surprising number of online businesses need, so the better question is which businesses pay for it, and how soon.

We cut our board of 370 researched online business ideas to the 93 that list writing as a skill. The figures below come from that cut, with custom GPT ideas left out of the rankings because OpenAI has announced it is retiring custom GPTs in favour of plugins. The revenue figures are estimates of potential, not earnings, and how we research explains the sums.

How many online business ideas need writing?

93 of the 370, a quarter. Leaving out three custom GPT ideas leaves 90, and they are cheap, with 88 under $500 and 17 free. The median takes six weeks to a first dollar and has a potential of $2,000 a month. 42 of the 90 are beginner ideas, and 60 need ten hours a week or less.

Writing is rarely alone. 46 of the 90 need it as their only skill. 17 pair it with design, 15 with marketing and nine with selling.

The type of business explains most of the speed.

Weeks to a first dollar, writing-based ideas by type
Service, 43 ideas4 weeks
Ecommerce, 15 ideas6 weeks
Newsletter, 16 ideas17 weeks
Content channel or site, 16 ideas20 weeks

Services pay in weeks and have the highest potential, a median of $2,500 a month. Ecommerce, mostly digital products, is $1,500, newsletters $1,500 and content $1,250.

What are the 8 best side hustles for writers?

We grouped the 90 by business model and kept the eight with at least five ideas. The ranking is by median weeks to a first dollar, with ties broken by median potential. Two of the eight have only five ideas each, so read them with care.

1. Social media management

Six ideas, 3.5 weeks, $2,750 potential, 33% beginner. Captions, replies and a posting calendar for a small business. The catch: two of the six list selling, and clients want regular, on-brand output.

2. Productised writing service

Eighteen ideas, four weeks, $2,750 potential, 39% beginner, three cost nothing. A fixed number of articles, emails or pages for a fixed price. Our productised service guide covers scoping. The catch: you still win each client.

3. Voiceover scripts and narration

Eight ideas, four weeks, $2,500 potential, 50% beginner. Scripts and narration for videos, ads and courses. The catch: clients can generate a script themselves, so you sell the quality of your edit.

4. Digital products

Sixteen ideas, six weeks, $1,500 potential, 88% beginner, six cost nothing. Guides, templates and swipe files. Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 a sale at the time of writing, with no monthly fee. The catch: no one finds a product by accident.

5. Local business websites

Five ideas, about 17 weeks, $2,000 potential, 40% beginner. Written copy for small business sites. A small sample, and slow because owners decide slowly.

6. Niche newsletters

Sixteen ideas, about 17 weeks, $1,500 potential, 50% beginner, six cost nothing. beehiiv's free plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers. Its first paid plan, Lite, is $49 a month billed annually or $59 billed monthly, at the time of writing. The catch: it takes a season of weekly issues before anyone pays.

7. Affiliate content sites

Ten ideas, about 17 weeks, $1,000 potential, 40% beginner. Reviews and guides that earn when readers buy. The lowest potential here.

8. Faceless content channels

Five ideas, about 26 weeks, $2,500 potential, none beginner. Scripts for video channels. A small sample, and the slowest on the board, at around six months.

What does the waiting look like in practice?

Weeks hide the workload, so count it in issues and hours. A weekly newsletter with a median of about 17 weeks to a first dollar means roughly 17 issues sent before the first payment. If each takes three hours, which is our assumption and not a board figure, that is 51 hours. A productised writing service at four weeks, with eight hours a week, is 32 hours, but a share of those hours must go on finding the client.

The newsletter route also has a platform limit to plan around. At the time of writing (October 2026), beehiiv's free plan does not include paid subscriptions or its ad network, so early income means arranging sponsors or sales yourself, or paying for a plan. That is why the services pay sooner: a client can say yes to you on day one.

How is AI changing writing work?

It is changing it, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Every plan on our board is built around ready-to-use prompts for an AI assistant, so a first draft is cheap for everyone, including your clients. Claude has a free plan, and Pro is $20 a month at the time of writing.

We found no source we trust on how much AI has reduced demand for freelance writing, so we do not quote a figure. What we can say is that the quickest writing ideas on our board are services that sell something beyond words: a fixed monthly result, a client's voice kept consistent, accuracy in a field the client does not have time to check. The slow ones sell words to an audience that has to find them.

How should a writer choose?

  1. Need money soon? A productised writing service or social media management is the quickest, at about four weeks, and needs written outreach, not calls.
  2. Can you wait six months? A newsletter or content site builds an asset, but plan on 17 weeks or more before a first payment.
  3. Want something in between? A digital product has no monthly cost and pays in about six weeks.

Pair writing with design if you can: 17 of the ideas use both, and side hustles for designers covers that side. If selling is the sticking point, side hustles for introverts ranks models by how little live selling they need. For the wider picture on cost, see online business ideas under $500. Questions people ask

What are the best side hustles for writers?

In our research, productised writing services and social media management are fastest, with a median of four weeks or less to a first dollar. Newsletters and content sites suit writers who can wait, since they take around four months. The potential of services is higher, at a median of $2,500 a month.

Can writers still make money online with AI around?

Yes, but the work changes. Every plan on our board uses AI to draft, so clients pay for editing, accuracy, voice and knowing a niche rather than for raw words. We found no source we trust on how much AI has cut demand, so we do not quote one.

How long does a newsletter take to make money?

In our data the median is about 17 weeks to a first dollar across 16 newsletter ideas. At the time of writing (October 2026), beehiiv's free plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers but does not include paid subscriptions or its ad network, so early income means finding sponsors yourself.

Do I need to be a professional writer?

No. 42 of the 90 writing-based ideas are beginner ideas. The skill that matters is writing clearly for one kind of reader, and it helps to know something about that reader's field. Professional experience lets you aim higher than our typical figures.

Is freelance writing the same as a productised writing service?

Not quite. A productised service sells one defined result at a fixed price, such as a monthly set of articles, so you quote nothing from scratch. Our data has 18 such ideas that use writing, with a median of four weeks to a first dollar.
