Is print on demand worth it in 2026? A worked margin, the fees and the legal risks

The short answer
Print on demand is worth it as a cheap way to learn selling, and a thin way to earn. In our worked illustration a $29 t-shirt sold on Etsy leaves about $12.52, a 43% margin, falling to 28% on a sale that comes through Etsy's ads. All 16 print on demand ideas we researched are beginner ideas, with a median potential of $1,500 a month.
Key takeaways
- All 16 print on demand ideas on our board are beginner ideas, and 9 of 16 estimate a first dollar within four weeks.
- The median potential is $1,500 a month, against $2,500 for the board as a whole.
- In our illustration a $29 tee leaves about $12.52 after production, shipping and Etsy fees, a 43% margin, or 28% on an Etsy Ads sale.
- Etsy takes $0.20 to list, 6.5% of the sale and 3% plus $0.25 in US payment processing.
- Trademark infringement is about likely confusion over who made a product, so brand names, characters and slogans you do not own are the main legal risk.
Print on demand sounds perfect: you design a shirt, a partner prints and ships it when someone buys, and you never hold stock. The honest question is what is left of each sale, and whether the risks are worth it.
We researched 16 print on demand ideas as part of 370 online business ideas, and the board figures below come from them. The revenue figures are estimates of potential, not earnings, and you can see how we work them out in how we research. The sums in the margin section are our illustration, labelled as one, using fees from Etsy's and Printify's own pages.
What does our data say about print on demand?
It is the easiest model on the board, and one of the smallest.
| Print on demand ideas | Figure |
|---|---|
| Ideas researched | 16 |
| Beginner ideas | 16 (100%) |
| Cost nothing to start | 5 (31%) |
| Ten hours a week or less | 16 (100%) |
| Median weeks to first dollar | 4 |
| Estimate four weeks or less | 9 (56%) |
| Median potential a month | $1,500 |
Every idea is a beginner idea, 14 of the 16 need five to ten hours a week, and all 16 estimate a first dollar within three months. The board median for potential is $2,500, so print on demand sits well below it. Canva is in all 16, Etsy in 5, Shopify in 5, Printful in 4 and Printify in 4. We leave Claude out of that count because our plans are written around it.
The pattern is common. Where there is no barrier to starting, there is no barrier for anyone else either.
What does Etsy take from a sale?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Etsy's own policy lists:
- Listing fee: $0.20 per listing, renewed every four months or after a sale.
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of the price plus delivery and gift wrapping.
- Payment processing, US: 3% plus $0.25 on the full amount, tax and postage included.
- Offsite Ads: 15% of an order that comes through an Etsy-bought ad, or 12% once a shop has made $10,000 over 365 days, capped at $100 an order. Shops under $10,000 can opt out.
What is the real margin? A worked illustration
Here is a t-shirt, with every sum shown. This is an illustration, not a forecast. The production cost is Printify's own example, the shipping cost is our assumption, and your numbers will differ.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Price the buyer pays (shipping included) | $29.00 |
| Production cost, Printify's example tee | $8.77 |
| Shipping to the buyer, our assumption | $4.50 |
| Etsy listing fee | $0.20 |
| Etsy transaction fee, 6.5% of $29 | $1.89 |
| Etsy processing, 3% of $29 plus $0.25 | $1.12 |
| Left over | $12.52 |
That is 43% of the price, before tax, returns and your time.
Now change one thing at a time:
- The sale comes through Etsy Offsite Ads. The 15% fee is $4.35, so you keep $8.17, or 28%.
- A pricier blank. Printful's product page lists a Bella and Canvas 3001 from $13.27. Swap that in and you keep $8.02, or 28%.
- Your potential figure. Our median potential for the model is $1,500 a month. That is revenue, and at $29 it means about 52 orders. At the 43% margin, those orders leave about $651, before tax and before paying for any advertising.
Printify's Premium plan is from $39 a month and lists discounts of up to 20% on products. If that discount applied to the $8.77 tee it would save about $1.75 a shirt, so you would need around 23 tees a month for the plan to pay for itself. Printful's pricing page lists a Growth plan at $24.99 a month, free once you reach $12,000 a year in sales.
What happens if you change the price?
The same tee, with the same costs, at three prices. Production is $8.77 and shipping $4.50 throughout, and every sum uses Etsy's fees above.
| Price | Etsy fees | Left over | Margin | If it is an Offsite Ads sale |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $24 | $2.73 | $8.00 | 33% | $4.40, or 18% |
| $29 | $3.21 | $12.52 | 43% | $8.17, or 28% |
| $34 | $3.68 | $17.05 | 50% | $11.95, or 35% |
The lesson is that price does most of the work. A $5 rise adds about $4.50 of margin, because the costs are mostly fixed. It also means that if you run your own ads, the cost of winning a sale has to stay below your margin: on the $29 tee, $12.52 before any ad spend. A shop that spends $10 on ads to sell one tee is left with $2.52.
What are the legal risks?
This is where beginners get hurt, and it is why we would not skip this section.
Trademarks. The US Patent and Trademark Office describes infringement as unauthorised use of a mark on or in connection with goods in a way that is likely to cause confusion about their source. It lists the similarity of the marks and how related the goods are as key factors, plus how the goods are marketed and sold. A sports team name, a film title, a famous catchphrase or a brand logo on a shirt all fit that description. The USPTO page states it is not legal advice, and neither is this.
Copyright. A design using a character, a song lyric or someone else's artwork is a separate problem. The US Copyright Office's January 2025 report says AI outputs can be protected only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements, and that prompts alone do not qualify. If you use AI to generate art, your design may be easy for others to copy.
Platform rules. Etsy's creativity standards say sellers must disclose that an item is made by a production partner, give accurate dispatch information, and disclose in the listing description if an item was created with AI.
A short checklist before you upload a design:
- Own it. The art and the words are yours, or properly licensed.
- Search the phrase. Check whether it is a registered mark for clothing before you print it.
- Disclose. Production partner, dispatch location and any AI use.
- Avoid trends tied to a brand. The viral phrase is often someone's trademark.
So is print on demand worth it?
For learning to sell, yes. You can start on free plans, our median estimate for a first dollar is four weeks, and the skills (design, listings, simple marketing) carry over to better ideas. For income, the margin is thin and your competitors are everywhere.
It suits you if you like designing, have five to ten hours a week and want a low-risk first project. It does not suit you if you need a reliable income, because the potential is modest and ads eat the margin.
What to do next
Work out your margin with your own price and the provider's current catalogue before you design anything. Then compare with the other free starts in online business ideas with no money and digital products to sell, which have no production cost at all. Our timeline data shows where print on demand sits against the other models, or take the 60 second quiz to see which ideas fit your hours.
Questions people ask
Is print on demand still profitable in 2026?
It can be, but the margin is thin. In our illustration a $29 t-shirt leaves about $12.52 after production, shipping and Etsy fees, which is 43%, and about 28% if the sale comes through Etsy's Offsite Ads. Profit depends on price, your blank costs and how much you spend on ads.
How much does Etsy take from a print on demand sale?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee on the price plus delivery, and US payment processing of 3% plus $0.25. On a $29 sale that is about $3.21. Sales that come through Etsy's Offsite Ads cost 15%, or 12% for shops with $10,000 or more in sales over a year.
How much does a print on demand t-shirt cost to make?
Printify's pricing page shows a t-shirt with a fulfilment cost of $8.77, before shipping. Printful lists a Bella and Canvas 3001 shirt from $13.27 on its product page. Prices vary by product, size, colour and print placement, so check the catalogue.
Can you get sued for print on demand designs?
Yes, if a design uses someone else's trademark or copyrighted work. The US Patent and Trademark Office describes infringement as unauthorised use of a mark that is likely to cause confusion about the source of goods. Stick to your own original designs and avoid brand names, characters and slogans you do not own.
Is print on demand good for beginners?
It is the most beginner friendly model on our board, with all 16 ideas rated beginner and every one needing under ten hours a week. The trade-off is competition and margin: the median potential is $1,500 a month, below the board median of $2,500.
