How to start a social media management business with AI: packages, pricing and tools

The short answer
To start a social media management business, choose one type of local business, offer two or three fixed packages priced from your hours, and use AI for drafting and Canva and a scheduler for production. Of the 15 ideas we researched, all cost under $500, 53% suit a beginner, and the median is 3 weeks to a first dollar.
Key takeaways
- All 15 AI social media management ideas on our board cost under $500 to start, and 53% are beginner level.
- The median is 3 weeks to a first client, and 14 of the 15 reach one within four weeks, though results for the client take far longer.
- Canva appears in 87% of these ideas and CapCut in 60%, which makes design the core skill: 73% list basic design.
- Canva Pro is US$144 a year and Buffer is $5 a channel a month, at the time of writing (October 2026), so six client channels cost about $42 a month.
- In our worked example, three clients at $400 a month leave $1,158 after tools for 24 hours of work, about $48 an hour.
Social media management is one of the quickest ways to a first paying client we have found, and one of the easiest to underprice. The work is simple to describe, so owners expect it to be cheap, and new managers often price it by the post and then discover that planning, approvals and reporting take as long as the posting.
Our figures come from the 15 AI social media management ideas among the 370 researched ideas on our board, explained in how we research. Tool prices come from each company's own pricing page in October 2026. Revenue figures are our estimates of potential, not what anyone has earned.
What do the board figures say?
Quick to start, cheap, and open to beginners:
| Measure | AI social media management ideas |
|---|---|
| Ideas on the board | 15 |
| Can start for under $500 | 15 (100%) |
| Median weeks to a first dollar | 3 (range 2 to 6) |
| Reach a first dollar within four weeks | 14 (93%) |
| Median potential a month | $3,000 |
| Beginner level | 8 (53%) |
| Need 5 to 10 hours a week | 9 (60%) |
| Need 10 to 20 hours a week | 6 (40%) |
Design leads, not selling. Only 2 of the 15 list sales as a skill, though you still have to ask for the business. All 15 name side hustle as a goal, and 10 also name replacing an income. Potential is the size of the opportunity, not what a first client brings, and the three week median is the time to a first paying client, not the time to results for that client. A new account takes months to build an audience, which is why clients ask for monthly reports.
Which tools do you need and what do they cost?
Two tools recur: Canva in 13 of the 15 ideas and CapCut in 9. Every plan on our board is written around Claude prompts, so Claude is in all of them and we have left it out of the ranking. At the time of writing (October 2026):
- Canva. A free plan, Pro at US$144 a year for one person (US$12 a month if you divide it, our arithmetic), and Business at US$250 a year per person.
- Buffer. A free plan with up to 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel. Paid Essentials is $5 a channel a month, billed as $60 a year for one channel, and Team is $10 a channel a month.
- CapCut. A free plan for video editing. Its paid prices show in local currency on the page, so we have no verified US dollar figure to give you.
You can serve your first one or two clients on free plans. Pay for Canva Pro when the template library and brand kit save you more time than they cost.
What should your packages include?
Sell fixed packages with a stated number of posts, not open-ended "management". Here is an illustration. We assume half an hour per post to draft, design and schedule it, plus one hour a month for planning and a report. Those are assumptions to replace with your own timings.
| Package | Posts a month | Hours | Price | Per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 8 | 8 x 0.5 + 1 = 5 | $250 | $50.00 |
| Standard | 16 | 16 x 0.5 + 1 = 9 | $400 | $44.44 |
| Growth | 30 | 30 x 0.5 + 1 = 16 | $700 | $43.75 |
These prices are ours for the illustration, not a market rate. Notice the per hour figure falls as the package grows. That is deliberate: larger clients get a slightly lower rate in return for a bigger, steadier invoice, but if the hourly figure drops much below $40 for you, the package is too cheap.
What does it cost you to run, and what is left?
Another illustration. You manage three clients, two channels each, so six channels in Buffer. Each client is on the $400 Standard package.
- Buffer: 6 channels x $5 = $30 a month
- Canva Pro: US$144 a year / 12 = $12 a month
- Tools in total: $30 + $12 = $42 a month
- Income: 3 x $400 = $1,200 a month
- Left after tools: $1,200 minus $42 = $1,158
- Hours: 3 clients x 8 hours = 24 hours, so $1,158 / 24 = about $48 an hour
That is before tax and any time spent finding clients, which is the part nobody budgets for. Losing one client takes $400 off the top while your tool bill hardly moves, so the real risk is not the software, it is keeping the accounts.
How does AI fit in?
AI saves time per post, which protects your hourly figure, but it does not replace the judgement. A good workflow: have Claude draft a month of ideas from a short brief about the business, edit each caption into the owner's voice, build the images in Canva, and schedule the lot in one sitting. The owner's real photos and local details are what make it work. Posts that read like anyone could have written them are what owners notice and cancel over.
Be careful of promising results. You are selling consistent, good posting and honest reporting, not follower counts, and our guide to how long it takes to make money online shows how slowly audiences build.
How do you find the first client?
Pick one type of local business and make a sample week of posts for one real example, using their public information. Send it to the owner with a short note. Then repeat for ten more. We cover the approach in how to get your first client.
What should you do this week?
- Pick one niche where you can tell good content from bad.
- Make a sample week in Canva and a scheduler's free plan.
- Time yourself so your hours per post are measured.
- Set three packages from your own numbers.
- Send the sample to ten owners and ask for one conversation.

Questions people ask
How do I start a social media management business?
Pick one niche such as salons or restaurants, make a sample month of content for a business you know, and offer it to local owners. Sell two or three fixed packages, and manage your work with Canva and a scheduler. 14 of the 15 ideas we researched reach a first dollar within four weeks.
How much does it cost to start a social media management business?
Very little. All 15 ideas on our board cost under $500. Canva has a free plan, Canva Pro is US$144 a year, and Buffer lists a free plan with 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel, then $5 a channel a month on a paid plan.
How much should a social media manager charge?
Work backwards from your hours. Estimate the time a client takes each month, multiply by the hourly rate you want, add your tool costs and round up. Our illustration, using half an hour per post plus an hour for planning and reporting, gave packages of $250, $400 and $700 a month.
Can AI run a social media account on its own?
Not well. AI drafts captions and ideas quickly, but a business needs its own voice, local detail and real photos, and someone must check every post. The service you sell is that judgement. AI cuts the time per post, which is what protects your hourly rate.
Do I need to be good at design?
Some. 73% of the ideas we researched list basic design as a skill, and 87% use Canva, which has templates. You need a consistent look and clean text on images, not a design degree.
