Search for the best online business to start and you get lists ranked by how exciting the idea sounds. A beginner needs something different: a business that is cheap enough to lose, simple enough to learn, and quick enough to teach you something. So we ranked business models on exactly those three things.

The numbers come from our board of 370 online business ideas, researched by hand. We kept ideas that cost under $500 and left out custom GPT ideas, because OpenAI has announced it is retiring custom GPTs in favour of plugins. That leaves 326 ideas, 119 of them beginner ideas. Revenue figures are estimates of potential, not earnings, and how we research explains the sums. Our guide to the best AI side hustle for a beginner with no money covers a narrower question. This one covers every model and budgets up to $500.

What counts as a beginner online business?

Every idea on our board is rated beginner, intermediate or advanced when we research it. 121 of the 370 ideas (33%) are rated beginner, and every one costs under $500.

Here is what the 119 beginner ideas under $500 have in common. The median takes four weeks to a first dollar and has a potential of $1,500 a month. 106 need ten hours a week or less. None need coding. The rest of the board, 207 ideas under $500, has a median potential of $2,500 and a median of five weeks. Beginner ideas trade a lower ceiling for an easier start.

How did we rank the 10 models?

We grouped the 326 ideas by business model and kept the models with at least five ideas. We then gave each model a position on three measures: the share of its ideas marked beginner, the median weeks to a first dollar, and the share that cost nothing to start. The positions are added up, and the lowest total ranks first. Ties share a position and are split on speed.

The 10 best online businesses for beginners, ranked

1. Print on demand

Sixteen ideas, 100% beginner, four weeks to a first dollar, $1,500 potential, five cost nothing. Designs on products that a partner prints and ships. The catch: a low ceiling and crowded niches, so a narrow audience matters more than polish.

2. Digital products

Thirty-one ideas, 90% beginner, six weeks, $1,500 potential, ten cost nothing. Templates, planners and guides made once. Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 a sale at the time of writing, with no monthly fee. The catch: nobody finds a product by accident.

3. AI voiceover

Thirteen ideas, 54% beginner, three weeks, $2,500 potential, none free. Narration for videos, ads and courses. The catch: it is a service, so you have to find clients, and you should check that your voice tool's licence allows commercial use.

4. AI social media management

Fifteen ideas, 53% beginner, three weeks, $3,000 potential, none free. A monthly package of posts for a small business. The catch: a regular client needs regular output, and scope creeps.

5. AI ad creative

Twelve ideas, 33% beginner, three weeks, $2,500 potential, one free. Short product videos for brands. The catch: buyers judge it on ad results, and video editing takes longer than it looks.

6. Niche newsletter

Fifteen ideas, 53% beginner, about 17 weeks, $1,500 potential, six free. beehiiv's free plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers, but not paid subscriptions or its ad network. The catch: months before anyone pays.

7. Productised service

Fifty-three ideas, 36% beginner, four weeks overall and three for beginner ideas, $3,000 potential, six free. One clearly priced result done the same way each time. The catch: you still win each client one at a time.

8. Affiliate content site

Fourteen ideas, 57% beginner, about 17 weeks, $1,000 potential, two free. Reviews and guides that earn when readers buy. The lowest potential of the ten, and a slow start.

9. AI receptionist service

Nineteen ideas, only 16% beginner, three weeks, $4,500 potential, none free. Answering a business's calls with an AI voice. A stretch pick: the highest potential here, but it is a service people rely on, and 14 of the 19 list sales as a skill.

10. AI automation for small businesses

Forty-six ideas, only 11% beginner, four weeks, $2,500 potential, two free. Connecting a business's existing tools, usually with Zapier. Another stretch pick, with the largest group of ideas and the most competition.

Faceless content channels tie with automation on total, and are left out because they take about 20 weeks to a first dollar.

Does a small budget help?

A little, in our data. Beginner ideas that cost nothing (29 of them) have a median of six weeks to a first dollar and $1,500 potential. Beginner ideas that cost something under $500 (90) have a median of four weeks and $2,000.

That is a pattern, not proof. The free ideas are mostly digital products and newsletters, which are slower by nature. But it hints that one paid tool can buy speed. For scale, at the time of writing Claude Pro is $20 a month and Canva Pro is US$144 a year, or US$12 a month. Both together is US$32 a month, and US$96 over three months, though both have free plans.

How should a beginner choose?

  1. Spending nothing? Start with print on demand or a digital product, and plan on four to six weeks.
  2. Can you spend $20 to $40 a month and message a few businesses a day? AI voiceover, social media management or ad creative reach a first dollar in about three weeks.
  3. Do you hate selling? See side hustles for introverts, which ranks models by how little live selling they need.
  4. Want a fixed-price offer? Our productised service guide shows how to package one.

Questions people ask

How much money do you need to start an online business?

Less than most people think. Every one of the 121 beginner ideas we researched costs under $500, and 29 cost nothing, using free plans. At the time of writing (October 2026) Claude has a free plan with Pro at $20 a month, and Canva has a free plan with Pro at US$144 a year.

Which online business makes money fastest for beginners?

Services sold to small businesses. Beginner ideas in AI voiceover, social media, ad creative and productised services have a median of three weeks to a first dollar. They assume you contact possible clients most days. Products and content are slower, at six weeks to about four months.

Do I need to know how to code to start an online business?
