The AI voiceover side hustle: who pays, what the licence allows and what to charge

A sound wave in black and orange with ElevenLabs, Descript and Canva logos for the AI voiceover side hustle

The short answer

The AI voiceover side hustle means selling narration made with an AI voice tool to businesses and creators. Commercial use needs a paid plan: ElevenLabs states its free plan has no commercial licence. Of the 13 ideas we researched, the median is 3 weeks to a first dollar and a potential of $2,500 a month, an estimate rather than earnings.

Key takeaways

  • We researched 13 AI voiceover ideas: median 3 weeks to a first dollar, 54% beginner level, and every one costs under $500 to start.
  • None of the 13 can start for nothing, because the free plan of the main tool, ElevenLabs, excludes commercial use at the time of writing (October 2026).
  • ElevenLabs appears in 12 of the 13 ideas, Descript and Canva in 6 each.
  • Writing is the top skill, listed in 62% of the ideas, and none list selling, though you still have to find clients.
  • In our worked example, voice credits for a 3 minute video cost about $1.64 against a $90 price, so your time, not the tool, is the cost.

AI voiceover looks like the easiest of the AI side hustles: type a script, press a button, send an audio file. That is also why the first thing to get right is not the voice but the licence, because the wrong plan can make your paid work a breach of the tool's terms.

Our figures come from the 13 AI voiceover ideas among the 370 researched ideas on our board, explained in how we research. Licence terms and prices come from the providers' own pages, read in October 2026, and they change, so check them before you sell. Potential revenue is our estimate, not anyone's earnings.

What do the board figures say?

This is one of the three fastest models on our board and one of the few that welcome beginners. The 13 ideas:

Every plan on our board is written around Claude prompts, which is why Claude is in all 13 and not in the list. The zero in the free column matters: unlike digital products or print on demand, voiceover has a cost from day one, because the licence that lets you sell the audio sits on a paid plan.

Can you use AI voices commercially?

Only on a paid plan, and you should read the terms of the tool you use. ElevenLabs, which 12 of the 13 ideas use, states in its help centre that its free plan does not include a commercial licence and cannot be used for any commercial purpose, and that free-plan content needs attribution. It states that all paid plans include a commercial licence, provided you are not using Beta Services, whose content cannot be used commercially.

The rule that catches people out is timing. The help page says audio generated during a paid subscription can be used commercially, while content created outside a paid subscription, before or after, cannot. So generate final client audio while you are paying, not on a free month, and keep the files.

Two practical steps follow. Put the tool's plan in your client contract, and tell the client in writing which rights you are passing on. If you are ever unsure whether a use is covered, ask the provider, because the terms of other tools differ and we have only checked this one.

Do you have to say the voice is AI?

Be open with clients as a matter of course, and then follow the platform where the video will be published. YouTube's help page on disclosing generative AI content says creators must disclose AI-generated or altered content that seems realistic, and gives as a trigger content that makes a real person appear to say or do something they did not. It lists cloning your own voice to create voiceovers or dubs as a minor edit that does not need disclosure, and notes that labels may appear on AI-generated audio.

For you, that means two things. Never clone a real person's voice without their clear permission, and tell clients that the narration is synthetic so they can handle any platform disclosure themselves.

Who buys, and what do you charge?

Buyers are people who need spoken words and do not want to record them. Reasoning from how the ideas are built rather than from a statistic, that means small businesses with explainer or product videos, trainers and course makers, and channel owners. Our 13 ideas span 11 industries, so pick one whose language you know.

ElevenLabs lists its plans at the time of writing as free (about 10 minutes of audio), Starter at $6 a month (about 30 minutes, with a first-month offer), Creator at $22 a month (about 121 minutes) and Pro at $99 (about 600 minutes). The minutes are approximate and shared across its products.

Worked example: what does one video cost, and what do you charge?

An illustration with our own assumptions. A client wants a 3 minute narration. You allow three takes, so you generate 9 minutes of audio. You are on the Creator plan.

  • Audio generated: 3 minutes x 3 takes = 9 minutes
  • Plan allowance: about 121 minutes for $22
  • Credit cost of the job: 9 / 121 x $22 = about $1.64
  • Price to the client at $30 a finished minute: 3 x $30 = $90
  • Your time, writing or editing the script, directing the takes and exporting: 1.5 hours
  • Left after credits: $90 minus $1.64 = $88.36, so about $58.91 an hour

At ten such videos a month you would use 90 minutes of credits, inside the Creator allowance, for revenue of $900 against a $22 plan. The tool is not the cost. Your time is, which is why the number of revisions you include is the real term of the deal.

How hard is it really?

Easier than most services and slower to differentiate. 54% of the ideas are beginner level, and writing is the most common skill at 62%, while none list selling, which does not mean you will not need to sell. Plenty of people can press the button. You compete on a clean script, a fast turnaround and knowing the language of one field, and with a median of three weeks to a first dollar you will learn quickly whether it works.

What should you do first?

  1. Read the licence of the tool you will use, and plan to pay for one month.
  2. Pick one buyer type and write one sample script of 60 seconds.
  3. Record it three ways so a prospect can hear the choice of voice.
  4. Send it to ten businesses or creators and ask what they would pay per finished minute.

Questions people ask

Can you make money with AI voiceovers?

Yes, businesses and creators pay for narration of videos, ads and courses. In our research the median is 3 weeks to a first dollar, with a potential of $2,500 a month, which is our estimate of what an idea could make once running, not a typical result. You must use a plan whose licence covers commercial work.

Can I use ElevenLabs voices commercially?

On paid plans, yes. ElevenLabs states that all paid plans include a commercial licence, provided you are not using Beta Services, and that the free plan does not include one. Audio generated during a paid subscription can be used commercially, while audio made outside one cannot.

Do I have to disclose that a voice is AI?

Be open with clients, and check each platform's rules where the video will appear. YouTube asks creators to disclose realistic altered or AI-generated content, for example content that makes a real person appear to say something they did not. It lists cloning your own voice for voiceovers as a minor edit that does not need disclosure.

How much should I charge for an AI voiceover?

Charge per finished minute with a minimum, not for the tool. Our illustration used $30 a finished minute and a $60 minimum, so a 3 minute script is $90. Add revisions to the scope, since each take uses credits and your time.

Who buys AI voiceovers?

Small businesses with explainer videos, trainers and course creators, ad makers and channel owners who do not want to record their own voice. Our ideas span 11 industries, so pick one you understand and learn its scripts.
